The city of Vigo is located in the south of Galicia, on the Atlantic coast and one of the most beautiful bays of the Iberian Peninsula, of which we highlight San Simón island, where troubadours and poets sang of distant loves and punishments, and its contact with the open sea where we can find the Cies Islands a natural paradise boasting of one of the best beaches in Europe and which can be visited from early spring onwards.
Vigo was a Celtic settlement, a Roman colony, a Suevian stronghold and later a notable medieval village which gradually flourished due to a broad industrial base from metal work to the salting of fish. Between the late nineteenth and early twentieth century it became one of the most important ports in maritime traffic; this created an open and cosmopolitan city and allows one to have an active cultural life, as can be seen through the history of its various theatres, from the Rosalía de Castro to the Tamberlick.
Currently Vigo is the industrial and financial capital of Galicia, and has a young university, but already well established in important fields such as engineering and marine science. It also has a Conservatory of Music and an extensive network of educational and cultural services dependent on the City Council.
The cultural activity of Vigo is remarkable and it is worth noting the existence of museums, art galleries, concert halls, performing arts spaces, and specialized libraries. But most of all it boasts of a natural environment which calls for outdoor activities, and the invigorating presence of the Atlantic Ocean which reaches the coast of Vigo in all its glory.
For these many reasons Vigo is a wonderful destination where to spend a few months studying and learning about another country and its culture, so staying here will be a rewarding and memorable experience.
